growing tomatoes – how to grow tomato plant .

  • For beginners in tomato gardening , buy seedling or avg plant from your favorite nursery and then we can proceed with the garden transplanting steps . you can ask for the following types of tomato plants as being beginner – big boy , lemon boy , early girl , brandywine or even cherry tomatoes are good .
  • Instead of growing a single variety of tomato plant – select two or 3 types – to get some steady harvest . 8 to 12 plants are enough for a family with 4 members . i know you don’t stop here you are up to grow even more than what mentioned . yes abundant supply tomatoes is not bad idea.
  • choose where to place the plants – as we know tomato plants love sunlight , we have to choose a sunny spot . where we get more than 7 hours of solid sunlight . to get fresh and better tasting tomatoes they need warm sunshine .
  • with rich soil with organic matter , our tomatoes grow better . layer the soil with organic fertilizer and compost, if you are new to gardening layers try vegetable garden page for more on this . if  you don’t have experience in own compost , go for buy . it costs around Rs 25o/-  per 25Kg of compost ( nearly $5 in united states ) .
  • Transplant the tomatoes to garden when the climate is normal . dig a hole in the ground to bury upto 60% of the plant size ( don’t worry if some leaves get buried ) . roots will grow from stem part of the plant, so no probs .
  • plant the tomatoes apart – kids dont remain as kids for ever , right . plant  each tomato with 60cm distance – to provide room to grow . in case we are to use cages – sure it needs even more than what said . by planting them apart , they don’t have to share the ground resources and sunlight .
  • sure water the plants after the transplanting process , as they are new to the environment . water the plants good enough to avoid the transplanting shock .
  • during the first week of plants should be  watered well – it needs about 500ml of water every day ( tomatoes dont like chill weather ) .
  • maintain moist soil around the stem - after 1 or 2 weeks we should get pine needles , dried grass or mulch straw . place any of them around the stem for 3ocm in diameter – so that it keeds the soil moist during dry weather and stay away from weeds . even pine needles are good to maintain acidic nature in soil .
  • after 15 days of transplant ,  the tomato plants must gain atlest 8 liters of water per week ( in case of rain that satisfies this rule – then you dont have to water  ) .  In dry weather it is better to water them even more .
  • provide some support for the plants - as tomato plants dont have a bulky and strong stem they sure need support to grow . use stakes for each plant – we need stakes with 2m length , which are buried at 5cm distance from the plant and 20cm in depth . even we can provide fence like structure to support sometimes iut even yileds more – but it is not that much familiar . make sure the stakes are enough to hold the plant ( bamboo , wood waste or even iron bar ) . if you have budget even try tomato support cages or even build your own cage.
  • fruitful result – after the flowers we get small green balls , allow them to grow ( according to the variety ) and durning a stage the tomato gets bright in color with good texture . we can pick the tomatoes when they are little bit soft .
