Growing Tomatoes
Additional pleasure to this summer is , growing tomatoes . for supermarket tomatoes – home grown heirloom tomatoes are far better . as the commercial tomatoes pay the price of texture and taste to get the easy shipping and long shelf life . though some fruits and vegetable gardening are challenging for home gardeners – growing tomatoes are much easier .
About heirloom tomato : heirloom tomatoes are obtained from seed stage . seeds are saved and collected for years and years . these tomatoes grow with full flavour , heirloom tomato comes in lots of colors and flavours . better part is they are easy for backyard gardening .

Steps growing heirloom tomatoes :
- get your seeds in a garden store or the gardening section in a departmental store. in a tray mix seeds with peat moss . Add a little water to the mixture to retain moisture, and then transport the mixture in a plastic pot before transplanting tomato seeds outdoors.
- To prevent burning , place your heirloom tomato plants in the shade and during night bring the plants inside . this process get the plants used for outdoor weather , which is called “hardening” .for 7 to 10 days repeat the same process , then plant the tomato seeds in your garden
- during the first week of growth , Water your tomato plants daily basis. Keep compost in your garden or in your container to help plants grow and prevent disease. now allow the tomatoes to get direct sunlight for gaining color and taste .
- give support ( wooden stakes or lengthy sticks ) for these plants , to grow tall and upright and prevent wobble or fall.
- harvesting heirloom tomatoes as soon as they turn colors is good .as sunlight is no longer needed , we can let the tomatoes are ripe in kitchen.
note : these kind of heirloom tomatoes get diseased easily – so avoid planting them near tobacco domain area , whether tobacco plants or even smoking could get tobacco mosaic virus .
