Growing Tomatoes & Zucchini

previously we came across post on growing tomatoes from seedling , on this update we are into zucchinis too . growing tomatoes from seeds . have the basic tools for ready and the below ones to sprout out. Things needed to plant : trays , good soil , compost , plastic kitchen wrap , pot , tomato seeds or zucchini seeds .

how to grow tomatoes and zucchinis :

  1. From six to eight weeks before the last expected frost , Plant the seeds of tomato and zucchini indoors . Fill a container with good soil (better is potting soil from garden center) and add enough water to make the soil moist but not muddy.
  2. Fill soil upto three-quarters full of the tray ( egg trays or any such – just to get seedlings ) . now add three to four seeds to the top . now add bit more soil upto the rim of the tray and then cover loosely with plastic wrap, such as kitchen plastic (Saran) wrap, or place in a greenhouse.
  3. water the soil so that it is moist . for every two or three days check the tray , if they need watering. it needs water , if the surface is dry to the touch . The seeds should germinate in 3 to 15 days.
  4. when the seeds show their first true leaves , transplant the seedlings to individual pots . second set of leaves are better . Fill the new pots with soil and make 3 to 4 inch hole .now select the largest and healthy look seedling from the trays and place the seedling , so that it roots dont get affected by your placement . the plants are buried in such a way that the first leaf from bottom is just about the soil . New roots will start grow around the stem buried.
  5. when there is no danger of frost , we can replant tomatoes and zucchini at outdoors . Gently take plant out of the pot and loosen the root ball. take off the lower leaves of each plant. Bury the plants with manner that each plant is three feet away. for zucchinis we can create mount like shape in soil and place upto 2 plants of it .
  6. about every three days Water the tomatoes and zucchinis ( or check the top 1 inch of the soil is not dry) . check if the soil is completely soaked .
  7. pick the tomatoes when they are inbetween stage ( soft to firm ).

  • Tomatoes grow well in soil with 6-7 ph range .
  • Select a place to growing tomatoes where these plants get at least 6-7 hours of sunlight ( so as to get rich and tasty tomatoes ).
  • To avoid bitter taste in zucchini , harvest when they are small .
